What is Brain Attack?
|
|
Brain attack (STOKE) is a disease
caused by decrease in blood supply to the brain.
|

What are the Type’s?
|
|
Two types
- Haemorrhagic in which there is a bleeding from the artery.
- Ischemic in which the blood supply to the part of brain is blocked. It leads to the death of that part of the brain. 80% cases of the brain attack are due to this
type.

What is the new method of treating stoke?
|
|
With the advent of new technology,
there is now an INJECTION available called TPA which can be used
to open the closed artery.

How successful is this treatment?
|
|
This treatment if given specified period of time the chances of
recovery become double.

Do all the patient’s get the treatment?
|
|
Only those patients who come to the hospital in initial period
of time and depending upon the severity can be given this
treatment.

- Weakness of one side of the body.
- Change in speech.

Immediately pain CT SCAN of the head is
required for initiating the treatment.

What are the side effects?
|
|
In properly selected patient and when
given by the doctor specialized in the treatment of stroke then
this treatment has minimal side effects. How ever in one out of
thousand cases it can cause bleeding in the brain.

What is the time window for getting the treatment?
|
|
With present technology the time window
is relatively small and treatment has to be started within 3
hours of onset of the first symptom.

How the stroke can be prevented?
|
- Regular Exercise.
- Good eating habit (avoid greasy food).
- No Smoking.
- No Stress.
- Good control of D.M and Hypertension.

What is Epilepsy?
|
|
Epilepsy is a disease characterized by occurrence of any event
called as Seizure more then once.
|

Is Epilepsy of only one type?
|
|
The term Epilepsy actually is a group of disorders. Broadly it
is of two types:-
- Generalized
which is associated with loss of Consciousness.
- Partial
which is associated with Motor Movement or Sensation
occurring in one part of the body. It may or may not be
associated with loss of Consciousness.

Is Epilepsy a disease or there is some
divine Cause to it?
|

Epilepsy is a disease & there is no divine cause of it.
|

How do we make sure it is Epilepsy?
|
|
The diagnosis is based on detailed history provided by the
Eyewitness. However test in the form of EEG, CT Scan are helpful
in diagnosis.

What are the precipitating factors of Seizures?
|
|
Lack of Sleep, Fasting, Fever, Flickering lights like a Disco or
T.V. Epileptics should avoid all these.
|
|
|

Do all Epileptics need treatment?
|
|
There is some group of patients who do not need long treatment.
However this has to be decided after careful thought by the
doctor.
|

Is there a fixed Cause or it varies form Patient to Patient?
|
|
There is no fixed treatment. Treatment has to be individualized.
|
|
|

What should be done if you find a person having a Seizure on
the roadside?
|
|
Patient should be turned to one side, Clothes should be
loosened. We should NOT try to open the mouth with a Spoon. We
should NOT put Shoe on their mouth & should NOT try to put
water or Medicine in their mouth. If the fit does not stop
within a span of 5 minutes then Patient should be taken to a
Doctor.

What can we do to prevent Epilepsy?
|
- Eat
clean Fresh Vegetables
- Avoid
Pork or half cooked meet.
- Have
a proper dietary & Sleep habits.
- Avoid
alcohol & drugs.

If I have Epilepsy can I eat &
drink with others?
|
|
Epilepsy does not spread by contact or sharing food.
|

If a patient has epilepsy his children will also have
Epilepsy?
|
|
If one of the Parent is Epileptic the chances of having
Epileptic Child are one in one lac. So it is Genetic in very are
causes.

Can Epileptics have normal married life and Children?
|
|
Yes they can have normal married life and Children.
|
|
|

What are the chances of having an abnormal baby while on
Epileptic drugs?
|
|
The chances are around 4 to 5% Still 95% of females have normal
children while being on the drugs.

Can I drive if I am an Epileptic?
|
|
For initial period when fits are not controlled driving is
strictly prohibited at least for 3 months from the date of last
attack. However once the fits are controlled patient can be
allowed gradually to resume driving.

What are the activities, which are restricted for an
Epileptic?
|
|
Swimming & piloting an Aircraft are not allowed throughout
life. However they can participate in almost any other sports
and recreational activities.

Do Epileptics enjoy normal life span?
|
|
Yes they do as Epilepsy does not affect any other organ of the
body.
|

Sleep Apnea
|

What are the normal components of sleep?
|
|
Like every thing one needs a proper amount of sleep. The
sleep required for normal person is 6 to 8 hours but more than
the hours of sleep, what is required is a proper restorative
nature of sleep. The amount of sleep required may very form
person to person.

What are the types of sleep?
|
|
Sleep is basically divided into REM and Non REM Sleep. REM sleep
occurs in cycles every few hours in a normal sleep.

What are the disorders, which affect the sleep?

The main disorders of sleep are

(lack of sleep)
- Excessive
daytime sleepiness

What are the causes for excessive
daytime sleepiness?
|

The causes for daytime sleepiness are as follows:
- Obstructive
Sleep Apnea.
- Narcolepsy.
- Idiopathic
Hypersomnia.

When do we call daytime sleep excessive?
|
|
When person falls asleep during a brief period of inactivity and
when he has had a normal period of sleep, night before, than the
day time sleep is called excessive day time sleepiness.

What are the symptoms of OSA?
|
|
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) usually affects the young to
middle aged people, Symptoms can be divided into those occurring
during daytime and those occurring during night.

|

A full night study in SLEEP LAB. is required for
establishing the diagnosis.

Why should this disease to be treated?
|
|
Although the symptom look quite benign. The disease if no
treated can be quite dangerous. It can lead to following
complication:
- Accident.
- Hypertension.
- Heart
disease.
- Stroke.
- Impotence

What is the treatment available?
|
- CPAP:
A small machine with a mask which has to be worm at
night.
- Surgery:
Success rate may very form 50% to 60%.
|

|
If I use CPAP Therapy do I have to wear
the machine daily?
|
|
No body get, addicted to CPAP therapy. For the patient
benefit one has to use for 70% of the days therapy is
beneficial.
